IMELDA MAY

Since being handpicked as a virtual unknown by Jools Holland to perform on his “Later” show in 2008, Imelda May from the Liberties in Dublin has dominated the Irish album charts for the last 18 months. Her stunning number one, double-platinum debut, "Love Tattoo", has remained in the top 20 for a whole year now, buoyed by hit singles “Johnnys Got a Boom Boom” and “Big Bad Handsome Man” which both attracted massive airplay. Awards have also flooded in for Imelda including 'Rising Star of 2009' by Hello magazine, 'Jazz Artist of 2009' by The Times, and the coveted Meteor for Best Irish Female 09. Imelda also performed to a world-wide TV audience of 100 million at the recent Grammy awards in LA. With her unique fusion of blues, rockabilly, and jazz, Imelda and her incredible band have made a huge impact on the live scene everywhere they have played. Expect the same and more at Tramore !

Imelda May is regarded by fans and critics alike, as one of the finest vocalists on the current global music scene. She's a rockin' little minx; tough, sassy, sexy, classy. A big voice on a fine tiny frame. She has performed for royal families, at huge festivals for all types of music, pubs and clubs, national radio stations, and at gigs all over the world. Imelda has carved out an extensive repertoire of cool covers and amazing self-penned songs. As well as that, she is in high demand as a guest vocalist with 2 collaborations currently dominating the airwaves; “Go Tell The Devil” (with Sharon Shannon) and “Lilac Wine” (with Jeff Beck). For a young woman she has all the musical experience of a veteran Rockabilly warrior.

Over the years Imelda has shared the stage with Alison Moyet, Dionne Warwick, Bryan Ferry, The Supremes, Sister Sledge, Scissor Sisters, Elvis Costello, and Elton John. Imelda is currently touring all over the world with her talented band of renowned musicians; Steve Rushton on Drums, Al Gare on Bass, Darrel Higham on guitar, and Dave Priseman on trumpet. This total Bop-a-Billy blend of trad-tastic Hepcats and kitten will be showcasing their talents for you at First Of The Summer Wine.

JERRY FISH (& the mudbug club)

On his MySpace, Jerry Fish, aka Gerard Whelan, lists his influences as “Beat poetry, dog, bone and sailor stories, Tom Waits, Dean Martin, Dr John, Jacques Brel, Ray Charles, One Mint Julep, Mingus and Ellington”. He goes on to describe his sound as “indie lounge-lizard schmooze, mariachi swampadelica”. He ticks all those eclectic boxes and more. What he doesn’t say is that current album “The Beautiful Untrue” builds magnificently on his debut (Be Yourself), that his Mudbug world of comic-cut theatre feels more attractive with each new song, and that Jerry and his Mudbug Club are one of the best and most entertaining live acts in the country !

Six years is way beyond an eternity in Rock ‘n’ Roll, and yes, it has been that long since the release of Be Yourself. Just as well that Jerry Fish sups from a well that is sunk way beneath the topsoil of pop. Once he left the constraints of the four piece rock format, he found a whole universe of music suddenly become a tangible and touchable prospect: New Orleans Jazz, Brazilian funk. Noir soundtracks, all manner of odd mondo scenes and black mambo jive. Opening the new album. ‘The Hole In The Boat’ is a swampy seafood-fed shuffle with Ribot-like guitar and zombie cardship vocals from Mr. Fish. Even more exotic is the single ‘Back To Before’, a delicate waltz around the ballroom of lost romance that’s stitched with singing saws, pedal steel and tinker-toy piano, while Fish’s latest dancing partner Carol Keogh contributes a truly remarkable turn somewhere between Patsy Cline and Mary Margaret O’Hara. Another duet, ‘Hell Or Heaven Sent’ featuring Imelda May, takes the form of a sweltering motel chronicle halfway between Howie Gelb and Barry Gifford, while ‘Rogue Melody’ is a slow C&W sway with Mariachi brass and a welcome reprise from Ms Keogh. The closing ‘Where The Sun Don’t Shine’ deserves to accompany the end credits of some arthouse masterpiece. “The Beautiful Untrue” is one of those records that raises the cool in the room without breaking a sweat.
